Annie Smith Peck
In the same May 9, 1909 issue of The Washington Herald, the World’s Greatest Explorer, Miss Annie Smith Peck is also featured. The Rhode Island native took up mountain climbing at the age of 44 and climbed the highest peaks 40 years before Sir Edmund Hillary.
